The Cheapest Way to Ship Jewelry in the US: $8.40 Coast to Coast

Reading time
A small parcel tied with string sitting on the pan of a postal scale, two paper tags hanging from it at different heights, with a roll of tape and one brass postage stamp on the desk beside it.

A jewelry parcel weighing four ounces and one weighing fifteen ounces cost exactly the same to ship across the United States — $6.93 to $8.40, depending only on distance — provided you buy the label the right way. Carry the same two parcels into a Post Office and they cost $7.90 and $12.90.

Where these numbers come from

Every rate below is lifted from USPS’s own 2026 price files, downloaded from usps.com on 15 September 2026. These are the prices effective 12 July 2026. I have not rounded anything and I have not quoted a comparison site.

What I am not claiming: I ship from Bangladesh, not from the United States, so none of these are my invoices. They are the published prices, and you can download the same spreadsheets. The one set of numbers in this post that is mine is at the end, and it is about a different thing entirely — what a shipping label costs versus what shipping actually costs.

One decision sets the price, and it is not the carrier

For anything jewelry-sized, USPS Ground Advantage wins on price against every alternative, and the only question that matters is whether you pay the retail price or the commercial price. Same service, same truck, same delivery window. Two different price lists.

ParcelRetail (Post Office counter)Commercial (bought online)You save
4 oz, Zone 1 (local)$7.90$6.93$0.97
4 oz, Zone 8 (coast to coast)$9.45$8.40$1.05
8 oz, Zone 4$8.30$7.46$0.84
12 oz, Zone 1$9.55$6.93$2.62
12 oz, Zone 8$12.90$8.40$4.50
1 lb, Zone 8$12.90$10.67$2.23
USPS Ground Advantage, 2026 published prices, effective 12 July 2026. Zone 1 is local; Zone 8 is the far side of the country.

Commercial pricing is flat to a pound. Retail is not.

Read the commercial column again. $6.93 at four ounces. $6.93 at eight. $6.93 at twelve. $6.93 at fifteen and a half. One price for anything under a pound, from Zone 1, and the same flatness holds in every zone — $8.40 all the way up in Zone 8.

The retail column does not do that. It holds at $7.90 up to eight ounces and then jumps to $9.55 — a 21% increase for one extra ounce, and 36% in Zone 8. For a small jewelry shop that difference is entirely avoidable, and it is avoidable for free.

This also kills a habit a lot of sellers have: agonising over shaving half an ounce off the packaging. Under a pound, on commercial pricing, weight does not cost you anything. Pack the piece so it survives the post and stop weighing the bubble wrap.

Where the commercial price comes from, and why it is free

Commercial pricing is not a volume discount you have to qualify for. It is what USPS charges when the label is bought through an approved platform instead of over the counter, and several platforms hand it to a shop with one order a month.

Pirate Ship is the plainest of them: it gives USPS Commercial Pricing with, in its own words, “no monthly fees, markup or hidden costs”, and is paid by the carrier rather than by the seller. Etsy’s own label tool and most other marketplace label tools price at the same commercial tier. If you are printing labels at home already, you are almost certainly on it. If you are queueing at the counter, you are not.

Ground Advantage also includes USPS Tracking and $100 of insurance in that price, outbound and return, with 2–5 day expected delivery. Those two inclusions matter more for jewelry than for almost anything else, and the next section is why.

The $1.60 option, and why I would not use it

A flat, light piece can go as a First-Class Mail letter rather than a parcel. The rates are not close:

First-Class Mail letter2026 retail priceWith the non-machinable surcharge
1 oz$0.82$1.31
2 oz$1.11$1.60
3 oz$1.40$1.89
3.5 oz (the limit)$1.69$2.18
USPS 2026 published retail prices. A padded or rigid envelope is non-machinable, which adds $0.49. Above 3.5 oz a letter is not a letter any more.

$1.60 against $8.40 is not a small difference, and plenty of sellers ship this way. Here is what the $6.80 buys you, and why I think it is the wrong saving for jewelry specifically:

A letter has no tracking and no insurance. Not reduced tracking — none. When a buyer opens a case saying the parcel never arrived, the seller with a tracking number wins it and the seller without one refunds. On a $38 order you have saved $6.80 and you are one claim away from losing $38 plus the piece. On a $200 order it is not a decision at all.

There is a second, quieter problem: a rigid jewelry box put through letter mail gets run against machinery it was not sorted for. Breakage on my own parcels runs at zero to one per hundred, and that is with a box, a bag and padding. I would not spend that record to save six dollars.

Priority Mail, and the one case for it

ServiceCommercialRetail
Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelope$11.12$12.90
Priority Mail Padded Flat Rate Envelope$11.99$14.00
Priority Mail Small Flat Rate Box$12.10$13.65
Ground Advantage, under 1 lb, furthest zone$8.40$12.90
USPS 2026 published prices. Flat rate means the price does not change with distance; Ground Advantage does.

The cheapest Priority option costs $2.72 more than the most expensive Ground Advantage price for a sub-pound parcel, and that gap buys speed, not savings. Flat rate is worth it when a parcel is both heavy and going far — which a pair of earrings never is. For jewelry, Priority Mail is a service upgrade you choose to offer, not a cheaper way to ship.

My own parcels do not go through USPS, so the label prices above are not mine. What is mine is the gap between the label price and the real one. My courier charges ৳120 outside Dhaka plus a 1% cash-on-delivery fee, and about 20% of parcels come back — almost always because the customer did not answer the phone, not because anything was wrong with the piece. Spread the returned parcels across the ones that do arrive and my true shipping cost is ৳162 per delivered order, 13.5% of the order value, against a sticker price of 10%. That ৳30 gap appears on no screen and in no report. It leaves with every order.

Three things to do with this

  1. Stop buying labels at the counter. This is the whole post. A 12 oz parcel to the far coast is $12.90 over the counter and $8.40 bought online, for identical service. If you ship one parcel a week that is $234 a year, for no change to anything a customer sees.
  2. Stop optimising weight under a pound. On commercial pricing there is one price from zero to 15.9 ounces. Use the padding the piece actually needs.
  3. Decide what you are charging, not just what you are paying. $8.40 is the label. It is not the cost — add the mailer, the box, the card, and the orders that come back. Then decide whether the buyer pays it, because free shipping is never free, and it belongs in the pricing formula rather than in the profit.

Questions people ask about this

What is the cheapest way to ship jewelry in the US?

USPS Ground Advantage bought at commercial pricing: $6.93 to $8.40 for anything up to 15.9 ounces in 2026, including tracking and $100 of insurance. A First-Class letter is cheaper at $1.60 but carries neither.

How do I get USPS commercial pricing?

Buy the label online rather than at the counter. Platforms such as Pirate Ship and Etsy’s own label tool give commercial rates with no monthly fee and no minimum volume.

How much does it cost to ship a ring in 2026?

A ring in a small box is comfortably under 8 ounces, so $6.93 locally and $8.40 coast to coast on commercial Ground Advantage, or $7.90 to $9.45 at a Post Office counter.

Does USPS Ground Advantage include insurance?

Yes. USPS includes $100 of insurance and USPS Tracking in the price, on outbound and return shipments, with more available to buy.

Can I post jewelry as a letter?

Up to 3.5 ounces, yes, and it costs $1.60 for two ounces with the non-machinable surcharge. There is no tracking and no insurance, so you lose every item-not-received claim.

Is Priority Mail cheaper than Ground Advantage for jewelry?

No. The cheapest Priority Mail flat rate option is $11.12 commercial against $8.40 for the heaviest sub-pound Ground Advantage parcel. Priority buys speed, not a lower price.
