Free Shipping on Etsy: What It Actually Costs You in 2026

Reading time
Chart: a $38 Etsy order broken into $25.84 left for the seller, a $6.50 shipping label, $4.06 of Etsy fees and $1.60 of packaging, with the same order compared three ways.

A buyer sees a necklace at $38 with free shipping. You see $38 land in your Etsy account. Between those two screens, about a third of that order has already left — and most guides tell you the wrong reason why. Etsy charges its transaction fee on shipping whether you show it or hide it. Free shipping does not cost you more in fees. It costs you somewhere else entirely, and that is the part worth getting right.

Where these numbers come from

Etsy fee percentages are from Etsy’s own Fees and Payments Policy, last updated 13 February 2026. Postage is USPS published retail, effective 12 July 2026. Packaging costs are built up from current list prices for boxes, mailers, tissue and stickers. Nothing here is a guess dressed up as a receipt — where a number is an estimate, it says so.

The short answer

Free shipping is not a fee problem. It is a pricing problem. If you switch a listing to free shipping and do not raise the price, you hand the buyer the postage out of your own margin — around $5 to $8 on a small parcel, on every single order. If you raise the price to cover it, you end up in exactly the same place as charging shipping separately, because Etsy takes its cut of the shipping either way.

A $38 necklace, three ways

Same necklace, same buyer, same box. Only the way the price is arranged changes. Assumptions: US seller, US buyer three zones away, a 6 oz parcel, an Etsy-purchased label at $6.50, and $1.60 of packaging. No Offsite Ads on this order.

A. $38, free shippingB. $32 + $6 shippingC. $32, free shipping
Buyer pays$38.00$38.00$32.00
Listing fee$0.20$0.20$0.20
Transaction fee 6.5%$2.47$2.47$2.08
Payment processing 3% + $0.25$1.39$1.39$1.21
Shipping label$6.50$6.50$6.50
Packaging$1.60$1.60$1.60
Total out$12.16$12.16$11.59
Left for you and the piece$25.84$25.84$20.41

Columns A and B are identical to the cent. Column C is the one that quietly costs you $5.43 on every order — and it is the one most people mean when they say they “switched to free shipping.”

Column C has a second problem. Etsy’s free shipping guarantee only applies from $35, so a $32 listing with free shipping gives away the postage and misses the threshold it was meant to hit.

Why the fee is the same either way

Etsy’s fee policy is explicit: the 6.5% transaction fee is charged on the item price plus the amount you charge for shipping and gift wrapping. Payment processing goes further still and applies to the item, the shipping and any sales tax.

So hiding $6 of postage inside the item price does not hide it from Etsy. You pay 6.5% + 3% on that $6 — about 57 cents — in both arrangements. Anyone telling you free shipping “saves fees” or “costs extra fees” has not run the two columns side by side.

The place free shipping genuinely does cost more: Offsite Ads. That fee is 15% of the full order total for shops under $10,000 a year. On the $38 order that is another $5.70, leaving $20.14. On the $32 order it is $4.80, leaving $15.61.

The $35 guarantee, and what Etsy actually says about search

Almost every guide still repeats that a $35 free shipping guarantee earns you “priority placement” in US search. That line comes from an Etsy Seller Handbook article written when the programme launched in 2019, and it has not been refreshed since.

Etsy’s current explainer on how search works was updated in August 2025. It lists eight ranking factors — relevancy, shop quality, listing quality, customer service quality, language, listing engagement, recency and shopper habits. The free shipping guarantee is not one of them. What Etsy does say there is narrower: shipping price is considered as an overall factor for US sellers.

That is a meaningful difference. A high shipping price can hold a listing back. A $35 guarantee is not a documented ranking lever any more. Treat free shipping as a conversion decision, not an SEO trick — and note that Etsy’s often-quoted “20% more likely to complete their purchase” figure is also from 2019, published without methodology.

The one lever that actually changes the label price

Sub-pound parcels are priced in a way that punishes fiddling. At the USPS counter, a 4 oz parcel and an 8 oz parcel to the same zone cost the same — $7.90 to a nearby zone as of 12 July 2026. Shaving grams off a boxed order saves nothing.

What does change the price is the box. Letter rates are dramatically cheaper:

WeightUSPS letter rate (stamped)
1 oz$0.82
2 oz$1.11
3 oz$1.40
3.5 oz$1.69

But to travel at those rates the piece must be under 3.5 oz, under a quarter of an inch thick, uniformly thick, and flexible enough to bend around a sorting belt. A rigid jewellery box fails every one of those tests, so the parcel rate applies. The box is what costs you $6, not the necklace.

For a thin pendant or a pair of studs, a flat card mailer instead of a box is the difference between $1.69 and $6.50 in postage. For anything with depth, accept the parcel price and put it in the item price.

What I do in my own shop

I run Rupanjali, a small online silver jewellery shop. I do not sell on Etsy — Etsy Payments does not operate in my country, so I cannot open a shop there. Everything above about Etsy comes from Etsy’s published rates, not from my dashboard.

What does carry across, because it is about running a small shop rather than about a platform:

  • I price at cost plus a margin in the 10% to 30% range, higher on pieces that take longer to finish. Postage sits inside that price, never outside it.
  • Packaging is a real line, not a rounding error. Box, mailer, tissue, thank-you card and sticker come to roughly $1.20 to $2.50 an order depending on how much you buy at once. Over a hundred orders that is a month of profit.
  • Returns are rare for me — at most one a month. The reason is boring: I confirm the order by phone before anything is packed. A minute of checking is cheaper than a return journey.
  • The number I actually watch is not revenue. It is what is left after fees, postage and packaging, as a percentage. If that percentage moves, something in the shop changed.

Do this with your own numbers

Five minutes, and you will know whether free shipping is costing you anything:

  • Take your last ten orders and write down what the buyer paid.
  • Add up the labels you actually bought for them.
  • Add packaging at your real cost — count the sticker and the card.
  • Apply 6.5% + 3% + $0.45 to each order total.
  • Divide what is left by what the buyer paid. That percentage is your shop, not anyone’s benchmark.

The free profit calculator does this arithmetic for you, and it saves your numbers in your own browser so you can come back to them.

Questions people ask about this

Does free shipping cost more in Etsy fees?

No. Etsy charges the 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus the shipping you charge, so a $38 item with free shipping and a $32 item with $6 shipping produce exactly the same fee. What costs you money is switching to free shipping without raising the price — on the order in this post that is $5.43 gone, per order.

Does the $35 free shipping guarantee still boost my search ranking?

Etsy no longer says so. The “priority placement” promise appears in a Seller Handbook article from 2019 that has not been updated. Etsy’s current explainer on how search works, updated in August 2025, lists eight ranking factors and the free shipping guarantee is not among them — though it does say shipping price is considered for US sellers. The programme still exists; the ranking claim is not documented any more.

How much does an Etsy shipping label actually cost?

Etsy does not publish a rate card, so anyone quoting an exact figure is guessing. What is published: USPS retail for a small parcel starts at $7.90 as of 12 July 2026, and Etsy labels use discounted commercial rates. For a small sub-pound parcel to a nearby zone, roughly $5.50 to $8.00 is a realistic range. Buy one label and you will know your own number exactly.

Can I send jewellery at letter rates to save money?

Only if it is genuinely flat. The piece must be under 3.5 oz, under a quarter inch thick, uniformly thick and able to bend. A pendant on a flat card qualifies. Anything in a rigid box does not, and gets charged as a parcel regardless of weight.

Should I offer free shipping at all?

If your item is over $35 and your price already absorbs the postage, yes — it removes a checkout surprise at no cost to you. If offering it means eating $6 an order, no. Raise the price first, then turn it on.

Fee percentages checked against Etsy’s published policy of 13 February 2026. Postage checked against USPS rates effective 12 July 2026. Rates change; the method does not.
