Most Etsy descriptions open with a brand story. That is a mistake with a measurable cost, because the first two lines are the only part most buyers read — they are what shows above “read more”, what Google pulls into a result snippet, and what Etsy reads for relevancy. Three jobs, two lines, and most sellers spend them on “welcome to my shop”.
Where this comes from
Etsy’s own ranking disclosure defines relevancy as how close a query is to keywords in a listing’s “tags, titles, descriptions, or attributes” — descriptions are named explicitly. Read 5 September 2026. I do not sell on Etsy and cannot, so this is not a claim about my Etsy conversion rate. It is a structure built from what Etsy publishes plus writing several hundred product descriptions on my own store.
Who the description is actually for
| Reader | What they need | How far they read |
|---|---|---|
| The buyer who has already decided | Confirmation of size, material and dispatch time | Two lines, then they buy |
| The buyer with one doubt | The answer to that specific doubt | They scan for it, then leave if they cannot find it |
| Etsy and Google | Words that match what people search | All of it |
The template
Six blocks, in this order. It works because it answers questions in the order they are asked.
- One sentence saying what it is, in plain words. Object, material, one distinguishing feature. This is the line that has to survive being read alone.
- One sentence on who it is for or when it is worn. This is where occasion keywords belong, in a real sentence rather than a list.
- The specifications, as a short list. Size in both units. Material and purity. Weight. Chain length. Clasp type. Anything a buyer would otherwise have to message you about.
- What arrives, and when. Packaging, dispatch time, whether it comes gift-boxed. Etsy counts dispatch speed under customer service quality, and buyers read the delivery estimate before almost anything else.
- Care, in two lines. Short. It signals that the item is worth caring for.
- Who made it. Now the story. Two or three sentences, and it converts better here than at the top because by this point the reader has decided they might want it.
The same product, written both ways
| What most listings open with | What the template opens with |
|---|---|
| “Welcome to my shop! ✨ Every piece is lovingly handcrafted with care in my little home studio. Thank you so much for supporting a small business…” | “A sterling silver anklet on a fine link chain, adjustable from 9 to 10.5 inches. Light enough to wear every day, and it does not catch on socks.” |
That last clause is the point. Every product category has one unspoken objection. For anklets it is snagging. For rings it is sizing. For anything silver it is tarnish. Find the objection and answer it in the first two lines, and you have done more than any keyword ever will.
Every piece in my shop is one of a kind and never restocked, so every description is written once and never optimised afterwards. That sounds like a disadvantage. It forced me into a template, and a template applied to 400 listings beats a better description applied to six.
What to leave out
- A keyword block at the bottom. “silver anklet, anklet for women, boho anklet, gift for her…” — those belong in your thirteen tags, where they do the same job without making the listing look like spam to a human.
- Shop policies pasted into every listing. They have their own section. Repeating them pushes the specifications further down.
- Emoji dividers and decorative lines. They add nothing on desktop and break the reading rhythm on mobile, which is where most of your buyers are.
- Anything that would embarrass you if a customer quoted it back. “Ships next day” when it does not is a case, a refund and a hit to the customer-service factor Etsy ranks on.
Three things to do with this
- Read the first two lines of your best-selling listing out loud. If they do not name the object and its material, rewrite them today. That is a ten-minute job on your highest-traffic page.
- Write down the last five questions buyers messaged you. Those are your missing lines. Put the answers in the description and the messages stop — which is time back as well as sales.
- Turn the template into a saved snippet. The value is not in any one description, it is in never having to decide the order again. Pair it with the new title rules so title and description are not fighting for the same words.

Questions people ask about this
Do Etsy descriptions affect search ranking?
Yes. Etsy’s own disclosure names descriptions as one of the four places it looks for keywords, alongside tags, titles and attributes. What it does not reward is a keyword list pasted at the bottom — that costs you the human reader without buying anything the tags were not already giving you.
How long should an Etsy description be?
Long enough to answer every question a buyer would otherwise message you, and no longer. Structure matters far more than length: the first two lines carry most of the weight because they are what shows before “read more”.
Should I put my shop story at the top?
No — put it near the bottom. A story reaches someone who is already interested; the specifications are what make them interested. Opening with the story spends your only guaranteed two lines on the part of the listing that persuades nobody who has not already decided.
Can I use the same description for similar items?
Use the same structure, not the same text. Identical descriptions across near-identical listings compound the frequency-capping problem Etsy discloses — the listings compete with each other rather than covering more ground. Change the specifications and the opening line at minimum.
