In April 2026 Etsy published new guidance on listing titles. It asks for titles of under fifteen words, with the item named first and words not repeated. Almost every Etsy SEO article still tells you to fill all 140 characters with keywords. One of those two things is now wrong.
Where this comes from
Three primary sources, all Etsy’s own, read on 5 September 2026: Etsy’s seller-handbook article New Guidance for Listing Titles, and a Tool to Help (dated 27 April 2026), Etsy’s legally required Search and Advertisement Ranking Disclosures, and Etsy Help’s page on tags. Nothing here is a guess about the algorithm, and nothing here is scraped from another blog.
What I am not doing is showing you my Etsy shop stats, because I do not sell on Etsy and I cannot — Etsy Payments does not operate in Bangladesh, where I live and run my own jewelry store. Everything below is either Etsy’s published position or arithmetic you can check yourself.
What Etsy now says, in its own words
| Etsy’s instruction | What it means when you sit down to write |
|---|---|
| Keep titles to less than 15 words | Roughly 60–90 characters, not 140 |
| Clearly state the item for sale, like “mug” or “dress” | The noun comes first, before adjectives |
| Include the most important traits upfront — colour, material, size | Traits second, in the order a buyer would say them |
| Try not to repeat words | “Silver Anklet Silver Jewelry Silver Gift” is now explicitly against the guidance |
Etsy also shipped an optional AI tool that rewrites titles for you, reachable from the search-visibility dashboard on Etsy.com or in the Etsy Seller app. It reads the current title, the first photo and the description. A platform does not build a tool to shorten titles unless long titles are a problem it wants solved.
Every Etsy listing character limit, in one table (2026)
A hard limit and a recommendation are two different things, and mixing them up is where most title advice goes wrong. Both are below, read from Etsy’s own help pages on 19 September 2026.
| Field | What Etsy allows |
|---|---|
| Listing title | 140 characters |
| Words in a title | No hard limit — Etsy recommends fewer than 15 words |
| Tags per listing | 13 |
| Characters in one tag | 20 |
| Photos per listing | 20 |
| Videos per listing | 2, each 5–15 seconds |
| Digital files per listing | 5 |
140 characters is a ceiling, not a target. Etsy’s own recommendation of fewer than 15 words usually lands somewhere around 60 to 90 characters, which is roughly half the allowance. Nothing rewards you for filling the rest. Check the practical limit yourself: open Etsy on a phone, look at any search grid, and see how much of a title is actually shown before it cuts off.
The 20-character tag limit is the one that catches people out. handmade sterling silver anklet is 31 characters, so it cannot be one tag — it has to be split, and the split is a decision, not an accident. Count the characters before you write the tag, not after Etsy refuses it.
And if the problem is that listings are getting no views at all, the limits are almost never the cause. Work through the thirteen checks for an Etsy shop with no views first, then come back and tidy the titles.

Why the old advice existed — and why it stopped working
For years Etsy search matched fairly literally. A title containing every phrasing a buyer might type had more chances to match one of them, so sellers wrote titles like a keyword list separated by commas. It worked well enough that it became the advice.
Etsy’s ranking disclosure now describes relevancy as “how proximate keywords in a listings’ tags, titles, descriptions, or attributes are relative to the search query”. Read that carefully. The title is one of four places a keyword can live, and it sits alongside a second, larger factor Etsy calls listing engagement rate — clicks, views, favourites and purchases combined.
That is the mechanism that punishes the stuffed title. A comma-salad title can still match the query and appear in results. Then nobody taps it, because it reads like spam next to a title that says what the thing is. The listing loses on engagement, and engagement is the factor that compounds.
My own store lists 400 pieces. Every one is one of a kind and never restocked, so each listing gets exactly one title and exactly one run at a buyer. There is no second version to test against.
That constraint is worth borrowing even if you do restock. Write the title as though you get one attempt, for one person, who is deciding in about a second whether to tap. Titles written that way happen to also satisfy the new guidance, which is not a coincidence.
The formula that fits inside fifteen words
- The object. Anklet. Ring. Mug. The word a stranger would use pointing at it.
- The two traits that decide the sale. Usually material and one visual quality. Sterling silver. Cubic zirconia. Hammered.
- The occasion or recipient, only if it is genuinely the reason people buy. “Bridesmaid” earns its place on some items and is noise on others.
- Stop. Everything left over goes in tags, attributes and the description, where Etsy also looks.
Three of my own pieces, titled both ways
These are real products from my shop. The old-style titles are the kind of thing the standard advice produces; the new ones follow Etsy’s April 2026 guidance. Count the words.
| Old style (keyword-first) | New style (Etsy’s 2026 guidance) |
|---|---|
| Silver Anklet Sterling Silver Anklets For Women Silver Payal Indian Anklet Gift For Her Handmade Silver Jewelry Boho Anklet (19 words) | Sterling Silver Anklet with Fine Link Chain, Adjustable (8 words) |
| Silver Ring Cubic Zirconia Ring CZ Silver Rings For Women Engagement Ring Promise Ring Gift Silver Jewelry (17 words) | Cubic Zirconia Solitaire Ring in 925 Sterling Silver (8 words) |
| Baby Bangle Silver Baby Bangles Kids Bangle Newborn Gift Silver Jewelry For Baby Girl Boy Bracelet (16 words) | Sterling Silver Baby Bangle, Smooth Edge, Newborn Gift (8 words) |
Notice what left. “Gift for her”, “boho”, “handmade”, “for women” — those are all real search terms, and they have not been thrown away. They belong in the thirteen tags, where they cost nothing and compete with nothing. If filling all thirteen inside the limit is the tedious part, there is a free builder that does it in the browser.
Where the leftover keywords actually go
| Field | Limit | What belongs there |
|---|---|---|
| Title | 140 characters; Etsy asks for under 15 words | The object and its two or three deciding traits |
| Tags | 13 tags, 20 characters each | Multi-word phrases a buyer would type: “silver anklet”, “bridesmaid gift” |
| Attributes | Varies by category | Colour, material, occasion, style — these also feed buyer filters |
| Description | No practical limit | Sentences, not keyword lists. Etsy names descriptions in its relevancy definition |
Twenty characters per tag is tighter than people expect. “handmade silver jewelry” is 23 and will not fit. That constraint alone forces the discipline the new title guidance is asking for.
Three things to do with this
- Open your ten best-selling listings and count the words in each title. Anything over fifteen is now out of step with Etsy’s own published guidance. Rewrite those first — they are the listings with engagement history worth protecting.
- Move every keyword you cut into the tags. Thirteen slots, twenty characters each. If a phrase does not fit in twenty characters it was probably two tags anyway.
- Change one thing at a time and give it six weeks. Etsy’s disclosure lists recency as a ranking factor and says new and relisted items get a temporary boost — so a title change causes a short bump that is not the same thing as the change working. Judge it after the bump, not during.
If you want the arithmetic on what each of those listings actually earns you once Etsy has taken its cut, that is in every Etsy fee in 2026, worked through on a $38 order. A better title on a listing that loses money just loses money faster.

Questions people ask about this
How many characters can an Etsy title be?
140. But since April 2026 Etsy’s own guidance asks for less than 15 words, which lands most titles between 60 and 90 characters. The 140 is a ceiling you are no longer being asked to reach.
Do keywords still need to be in the title to rank?
Not exclusively. Etsy’s ranking disclosure defines relevancy as how close the query is to keywords in a listing’s tags, titles, descriptions, or attributes — four fields, not one. A keyword that does not fit the title is not lost if it is in a tag.
Should I put the same keyword in the title and the tags?
Etsy publishes no rule against it, and one deliberate overlap on your main phrase is sensible. What Etsy does say is “try not to repeat words” within the title. Using all thirteen tag slots on near-identical phrasings of one keyword wastes twelve of them.
Will rewriting my titles hurt my rankings?
Editing a listing does not reset its history. Etsy lists recency as a ranking factor and gives new and relisted items a temporary boost, so expect a short lift, then a settle. The risk is not the edit — it is changing titles, photos and price at once and never learning which one moved the number.
Is Etsy’s AI title tool worth using?
It is free, optional, and it works from your current title, first photo and description, so it is a fast second opinion on whether a title is over-stuffed. It cannot know which two traits actually sell your item. Use it to check length and readability, not to decide positioning.
How many characters can an Etsy tag be?
Twenty, including spaces. You get 13 tags per listing and each one can hold up to 20 characters, so a long phrase like handmade sterling silver anklet — 31 characters — has to be split across two tags. Count before you type; Etsy will simply stop accepting characters at the limit.
